Wedding toasts
Who gives wedding toasts?
The best man always makes the first wedding toast. The
fathers of the bride and groom generally go next. Then, the
groom may want to toast his bride, his parents and in-laws and the
bride may follow with the same if she feel comfortable. Finally,
other guests, such as siblings, wedding party members and others guest
may want to give a short wedding toast as well.
When are the wedding toasts given?
Wedding toasts are generally given at the rehearsal dinner and
at the wedding reception some time after the food has been served and
the bride and groom have had their "first
dance." The rehearsal dinner is more
appropriate for the "open-mike" forum where any guest can
speak because of the more intimate setting and less scheduled agenda.
A few guidelines for wedding toasts...
wedding toasts should be heartfelt and personal without being too revealing or embarrassing for the bride and groom (parents are listening.)
wedding toasts should be respectful of the bride and groom and not include references to past lovers of either the bride or groom.
wedding toasts should focus on positive qualities or memories of the bride or groom, now is not the time to air out dirty laundry.
wedding toasts should be short and sweet; five minutes maximum.
